Have the same issue here, I have them read the Graveyard Book and then tell me if they liked it/too scary/not scary enough, that way I have a better sense about what kind of scary they like. Also, Anna Dressed in Blood is another good one to add.

OHHH and add Dark Inside to the list!! Rage Within is the second book and I've stalled on it, need to push through, but Dark Inside is awesome and has a boy protagonist (So does Anna Dressed in Blood)
