To Kill a Mockingbird
by
"The books I added on this list were intended to provide food for thought. To Kill a Mockingbird is a wonderful book because it is young, inoccent and entertaining. However it is a book everyone should read once because it makes us rethink how we view race, especially for those of us who live in the South. While some object to rape as a plot device and the racism of some of the characters, I think it's ridiculous to pretend that these things don't exist."

The Diary of a Young Girl
by
"I think that this book is interesting even without the Holocaust element. The writing from the viewpoint of a teenage girl is really interesting. But of course the ending is what makes the story so tragic."

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (Harry Potter, #1)
by
"This, along with J.K. Rowling's other books in the series, are the books that will define my generation. Unfortunately the other books that do that are the Twilight series but I digress."

"I thought it was an interesting idea to take a biblical story and retell it from the viewpoint of women, who are so often excluded from holy writings."

Schindler’s List
by
"Just a warning: this book is not pleasant to read. But it's one of those books that everyone needs to read. While the focus is on the Holocaust and the hurt that people do one another, I like to think that the real message is how people are so willing to risk everything for people they barely even know. Humans are complex. Oscar Schindler is a Nazi who saves many, many Jews. He is a womanizer, an alcoholic and despite all that a great, great man."

The Lottery and Other Stories
by
"This short story really makes you consider the effects of mob action and always obeying the dictates of tradition. Just because something has always been done doesn't mean that it needs to be done until the end of time."

A Great and Terrible Beauty (Gemma Doyle, #1)
by
"One of the best books written for teenage girls. In this story the girls are actually well done and not silly and weak like in some well known writings. While Gemma is the main character and the narrator, the main villain and the side character named Felicity are the characters that make the story. I also like the fact that there is a homosexual character. I enjoyed this book immensely and it is my mission in life to get everyone I know to read it."

Bastard Out of Carolina

"This book is a rather dark book about growing up poor and white in the south. The girl is also abused by her stepfather and this story is loosely based on the author's life."
