I also liked The Guns of August because it gave me a real foundation for understanding the history of the war. The political atmosphere that lead up to it and the players involved. Have you read The Great Promise? It approaches the war from the memoirs of a Royal Field Artillery telephonist. It describes the war from personal experiences. The journal entries are compelling. The book is written by first time author Frederick Coxen.
