Parable of the Sower (Earthseed, #1)
by
"It's wonderful! It's got an amazing plot and it's literature. Two other pluses -- 1) It's by a woman author. SF has a derth of women writing. 2) It's by a person of color about a person of color. I'd like to challenge the club to some needed diversity."

Red Mars (Mars Trilogy, #1)

"Some of the science has become dated, but the idea isn't. It has great world-building, character development and plot. A rare SF trifecta."
