"This is a deeply insightful novel about the psychology of personality as affected by upbringing across several generations. I couldn't fault the writing or mood of this book- totally captivating. It might be too harrowing for some readers."

"Well told, spooky tale in the true mystery/romance/suspense genre. Very well written in its time although the style has been copied endlessly since. An original!"

"A great exploration of the influence changed surroundings have on people's lives. The descriptions of the primitive living conditions gradually changing to familiar as the family lives longer in Africa can be quite heartbreaking. The bravery and endurance of the characters is very well told. The ending was a bit odd, but I just felt that the beginning and middle were engrossing enough to forgive it.
