LDS Book Club Reads

Good books appropriate for LDS (Mormon) Book Club selections (morally clean and minimal curse words). Other desired characteristics include the following: appealing to large audience of readers, short enough or engaging enough to be read within one month's time, plot or topic provides a stimulating discussion rather than an argument, and usually found in libraries or second-hand book stores.

Ruth Please only include books you have actually read and know what the content is. Thanks! I hope I get a lot of great recommendations this way!

message 2: by Sarah (new)

Sarah The Good Earth (House of Earth, #1) by Pearl S. Buck The Good Earth, by Pearl S. Buck

message 3: by Ruth (new)

Ruth Thanks Sarah. I've added it to the list.

Thanks for this list! It made me sure about some books I wondered about. I must read The Hunger Games!

message 5: by Ruth (new)

Ruth Yes, you MUST Dominique!

message 6: by Heidi (new)

Heidi This is a great list! Thanks for sharing all of these titles.

message 7: by Adrienne (new)

Adrienne Pretty sure Flowers for Algernon is not a morally clean book with minimal curse words. I found it to be exactly the opposite. My husband said he must have read an abridged version in high school because he doesn't remember any of that.

Just FYI.

message 8: by Regan (new)

Regan I'm just in the 1st chapter of Undeadly (The Reaper Diaries, #1) by Michele Vail [which is on the list] and it already has quite a bit of language.
Just throwing a heads-up out there.

message 9: by June (new)

June I love this list! I enjoy reading all sorts of genres and things that expand my knowledge of humanity as well as things just for fun. Thanks for giving me a list of possibilities - especially when there are so many books out there to read.

message 10: by Kenzee (new)

Kenzee Glad to find this list! Here are some that our book group has loved: The Heartmender, When Crickets Cry, Blackmoore.

message 11: by Ruth (new)

Ruth Thanks everyone for the input. I'm not sure how to delete books from the list that others have added. I'll look into it more and add the other suggestions.

message 13: by Erica (last edited Mar 20, 2016 09:17AM) (new)

Erica T Some of the books on this list aren't books I would suggest for an LDS book club. I haven't read it but have been told My Sister's Keeper is full of language. Also The Thirteenth Tale has a scene that I would call "R rated" or at least strong PG-13.

Regan What might be good is a group that gives details on the content of a book like the Parental Guide for movies on IMDB. They divide it into sections like language, alcohol/drug use, sexual content, and violence. Then each section gives details like 3 "D words" or a couple disappears into room but nothing is seen. That way you get a good idea of what's in the book without having to read it and get surprised. Lets face it, different LDS persons are going to have different ideas about what's okay to read. And there are Moms out there who want to know what's in their kid's books too. This way you could decide for yourself.

message 15: by Erica (new)

Erica T It would be nice to have a group like that. There is an LDS group on here, but it doesn't have a lot of info on it. Any time I read a book I make a note at the bottom of my review that lists the language and sexual content. It would be helpful if more reviewers would do something like that. Feel free to check out my reviews if that would be helpful to you.

message 16: by Janet (new)

Janet I have read Memoirs of a Geisha and while it is interesting I would not recommend it for an LDS reading club. Even the description of it tells you that a young geisha's virginity is up for the highest bidder.

message 17: by Erica (new)

Erica T I agree Janet. This is actually kind of a weird list. There are several books on here that I would not pick for my LDS book club. Plus there are a lot of books that are high on the list that I've never even heard of and that have less than 50 reviews on all of goodreads which makes me feel like there are people somehow voting for their author friend's book multiple times to get it high on a list like this.

message 18: by Laura (new)

Laura Walker I'm not sure if this group is still very active, but here is another LDS romance. I'm actually the author, so if this isn't allowed, then please remove. Thanks! When the Clouds Lift by Laura L. Walker

kelley Our group has read 123 books. I'm not sure the link will work but here it is https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...
