Jihyen Ha I have enjoyed these books as well. They really make the reader think about our society. Not only for people in the USA, but people in general would learn from these books.

Pete Wyeth Really glad to see Diary Of A Young Girl at number 2. Such a good book.

Charlotte Babb Uncle tom's cabin is available at project Gutenberg: http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/searc...

message 205: by Julia (new)

Julia Serafina A well thought out list! Having read quite a few of the books listed above, I have to agree with the title for this collection. Feeling rather inspired to read the rest now... :-)

Frank Debbie wrote: "i dnot think you can get a copy of uncle toms cabin any more"
Did you know that the book, an enormous bestseller at the time and still today, only was turned into a movie twice, once for television and before that as a mute black and white movie? It is said the book started the war between north and south and that it is feared a movie could, still today, be too hot for the studios to handle. It is available for free as an ebook and new on sale (Cheaper than anyplace else, just as 200000 other bestsellers)from Booksygen: http://www.booksygen.com/item/9780689...

message 211: by Frank (new)

Frank Here is a list ranked in order of how much buzz each title gets online right now: www.booksygen.com

message 212: by Bhavana (new)

Bhavana Thank you for the great list of books. I was actually looking for some recommendations and I think I should go with this list.

message 213: by Rachel (new)

Rachel ive read too many books on this list! nerds unite!! LOL ;)
Ever*

message 214: by Alena (new)

Alena Excellent list. These are books that should be read for a variety of reasons, but mostly because each in their own way open our minds to other places and other ideas.

message 215: by Clackamas (last edited Apr 04, 2012 03:59PM) (new)

Clackamas I put far too much thought into my list, but I like it. No author shows up more than once and they should all make a person in any type of society think... my list is about broadening your worldview.

There is a lot of criticism for religious works being on the list. In my opinion, if millions of people have used teachings from them to make decisions good and bad for the world, it is a good idea for all of us to know where they are coming from.

Also, there is criticism for Twilight... While I doubt the book generated any great thought about the world, it DID create a whole generation of female readers. Many young women who were not interested in reading prior to Twilight now read regularly, and have a greater chance of being exposed to the great works on this list. It didn't make MY list, but I understand why some young people would put it and the Harry Potter novels on a must-read list.

message 216: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie The way I made my votes for this list were by this question, "What If I had never read this book...?" The books I selected have either made me really contemplate and perhaps change my perspective on things, or made me so emotionally attached to the characters that I somehow felt they were apart of me.
If they have made that much of an imprint on me, then I feel others should try them out just once. I know most of these I've read atleast twice!

message 217: by Mary (new)

Mary I am reading Uncle Tom's Cabin. I don't know why I didn't read it earlier. It is an old paperback used by my daughter in high school. It has passages marked in ink so I know she read it. I have just finished reading
The Healing by Jonathan Odell; a novel about slavery.
One of the best written books ever! We need to read and
understand our terrible history of using slaves.

Lea Laikhuram wrote: "Recently I went searching for this very enlightening book by Ivan Illich, Deschooling Society, only to find that it has been out of print for ages...

BTW, my friends here, please be very careful ..."

Nice list - makes me wish I had more time on Earth to read all these books. And just so you know Laikhuram not every book completely warps the mind (for better or worse)of the person who reads it. I've read Twilight and still maintain a perfectly normal life and career as a teacher. Not everyone who reads books like that becomes completely and totally immersed in them.

Lea Pamela wrote: "edna wrote: "the book of mormon and twilight? you've got to be kididng me, now i do like twilight but not to be put aside with to kill a mocking bird or the catcher and the rye. shouldnt even be in..."

Pamela - it's wonderful that you have found something you believe in. But what does your post mean? Everyone has to agree with you on books and religion or that's offensive? That's just silly and obnoxious.

message 220: by Lea (new)

Lea Pamela wrote: "deleted user wrote: "LOL! I agree with you about the book of Mormon! But altho I had to read To Kill a Mockingbird it bored me, however, I could barely put Twilight down!!! Much more entertaining ..."

Just because you loved the Book of Mormon that does not mean anyone else has to!

Lea Jc11king wrote: "Twilight has no business here...it does not impact thinking at all...

It should be deleted from this list."

I disagree. When people are reading they are thinking, which always impacts the brain. You don't like Twilight, you may think it's a trashy and easy read. That doesn't mean it didn't inspire other people to read. After reading Twilight young readers may go on to read the classics referenced in the book, or more traditional vampire fiction. They may be inspired to read Dracula. So, don't be ridiculous. Books always impact thought.

Anger issues? I know some very smart, successful people who have read those books. They're not blithering idiots, they've also read several of the classics. The two can coincide in the world, it doesn't mean anything tragic is going to happen.

They have it on Gutenberg for free. I downloaded the ebook and read it on Mobipocket software.

message 226: by [deleted user] (new)

This list is so good and true!

message 227: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth Grooms Twilight, gag me. Shouldn't be up there with all those classic!!! Some rolling in graves I should think...

message 228: by Marty (new)

Marty I re-read Atlas Shrugged 2 summers ago- AND OH MY GOSH.... was amazed at the similarities to our news...only the names are changed

message 229: by Brian (new)

Brian This list is far too long to be of any use whatsoever. Once a list has thousands of books on it... you can trivially say the list is about anything. It's lost all of it's meaning. You can generate this list simply by looking at all books on goodreads and sorting by order of average rating. Waste of time.

These lists should be capped off at 100 books or so. If anyone can add a book and there's no limit, then every list turns into the same list of most popular books.

message 230: by Theresa (new)

Theresa @ Debbie from 2008: presumably by now someone has told you that not only can you get Uncle Tom they even sell it @ B&N.

message 231: by Marty (new)

Marty Yes it is a bit long and many of the books listed ....should NOT be....

message 232: by Actæon: (new)

Actæon: What an insular and facile list of books. With the exception of maybe 20 or 30 great texts, the rest are readily forgettable, mostly childish (literally) and a waste of your very precious reading time.

message 233: by Nyle (new)

Nyle A wonderful list! I've read and enjoyed some of the books here, and I will try to make it a point to read the other books as well.. Thank you, you gave me an idea, instead of spending my time playing computer games.

message 234: by Carole (new)

Carole An amazing selection. I am so glad several children's classics made on to the list. Books I read as a child are still close to my heart!

message 235: by John (new)

John Wood Debbie wrote: "i dnot think you can get a copy of uncle toms cabin any more"

Of course you can get "Uncle Tom's Cabin". Look it up on Amazon or Barnes and Noble.

message 236: by Monagin (new)

Monagin what a nice list! wish I could read them all!

message 237: by Pete (new)

Pete Wyeth I have a soft spot for Kafka on the shore. Any Haruki Murakami books are really good reads.

message 238: by Loretta (new)

Loretta What a great list. Can't wait to finish it.

message 239: by [deleted user] (new)

Debbie wrote: "i dnot think you can get a copy of uncle toms cabin any more"

Yes, you can...in America. I believe some other countries have banned the book. If you follow the link below you can order it.
http://www.amazon.com/Uncle-Cabin-Dov...

Ice Queen Wanderer •The Cursed Prophetess• Why are there so few non classics on this list? It's quite disappointing.

message 241: by Danielle (new)

Danielle Green Eggs and Ham? A childhood favorite of mine. I'm so happy it made the list! If any children's book deserves it, this book does.

message 242: by Jack (new)

Jack Chapman Shakespeare on the list 3 times? Only actors should read the great William Shakespeare, the rest of us should watch the plays.

message 243: by Saeed (new)

Saeed there are many books made into movies on this list. some of them which I just hate (harry potter, twilight etc). otherwise a good list!

message 244: by [deleted user] (new)

This list is an interesting mix of good, bad and awful. Didn't bother to look, but 'Where the Red Fern Grows' has been on my mind, should be on the list.

message 245: by Sydney (new)

Sydney I am seeing a lot of incredibly boring books on this list. But that is just my opinion. I do appreciate how many people can agree on the creation of one writer pushing it to others as a wonderful book that everyone should give a chance to enjoy :) Go readers!

message 246: by Margaret (new)

Margaret Yes! My father just recently purchased me a copy of Uncle Tom's Cabin (it's even the annotated version). He found it at Barnes and Nobles.

message 247: by Ruby (new)

Ruby Henson I have read almost all of the books from this list and new books that are great could be added everyday. Meanwhile just keep reading all the good books you have at your fingertips free at your public library. There is never enough time to read them all. The library is the best return on your tax dollar within your tax bill.
When my husband wants to vote down library tax, I just say" Do that and I will order and buy every book I want to read." I do buy books but usually ones I read over and over or a regional book or genealogy that I want to own.

message 248: by Barbara (new)

Barbara Debbie wrote: "i dnot think you can get a copy of uncle toms cabin any more"

Yes, it is available in paperback and on Kindle.

message 249: by Barbara (new)

Barbara I have not read "Twilight". I'm not against it, I'm just not into the whole vampire thing. That beign said, what I don't agree with is it's being on a list of books "everyone should read." Why? Does it have some deep social significance? No, it's just a popular book, no reason why "everyone" should need to read it. The type of books that sould be on this list are ones that have a real lesson to share. Books such as "To Kill a Mockingbird" & "Anne Frank Diary of a Young Girl" or"The Chronicles of Narnia" are the type of books that should be on the list. Many other important titles have been left off the list.

message 250: by Victoria (new)

Victoria Mostly a good list, though I will argue with some inclusions. No, everyone does NOT need to read Twilight. BTW, don't say a book is unavailable unless you've looked. Amazon and WorldCat will find almost anything. If your library doesn't own an item, there's always interlibrary loan.

Actually I do have a BA in English from long ago, so I have read a lot of these. Also I homeschooled my kids, so I've been through several more than once. Good books last. That's how you know they are good books.
