message 951: by Deb (new)

Deb I was a high school media specialist for years and I always told my students, "If we all liked the same books, our library would consist of multiple copies of just that book."

message 952: by Travis (new)

Travis Basically what I tell my kids when they argue over books or movies.
Except I use, Ben and Jerry's Ice cream as my example.

message 953: by Athena (new)

Athena i agree about there needing to b mods. It is really mean that people are just talking trash about some of these books, respect other people because some of these comments are just down right mean :(

message 954: by jenny (new)

jenny How could the book "the book of mormon" be on the list? Who would read it except people who are mormons. Very strange.

message 955: by Athena (new)

Athena Tim wrote: "How could the book "the book of mormon" be on the list? Who would read it except people who are mormons. Very strange."

No it's not JUST mormons, i no plenty of non-mormons who've read it.

message 956: by jenny (new)

jenny I dont believe you. Plus I dont believe most Mormons have read it.

message 957: by Athena (new)

Athena i respect ur beliefs. just for the record though i am 12 and have read it twice. Guess we have to agree to disagree

Jordan Neal Tim wrote: "I dont believe you. Plus I dont believe most Mormons have read it."

Have you read it? It would be really arrogant to criticize a book that you've never read. So I'd just assume that you've read it. I know a lot of non-mormons that have read it. But either way its one of the most influential books that's come out of America, so I think it has every right to be up there.

message 961: by Felicity (new)

Felicity Hollow Dorian gray is the worst book in the world, i finnished it coz i cant not finnish a book it is crap and i completley hate it and i had the deluded misfortune to think it might be better in the cinima oh how foolish and idiotic of me two hrs of hell and 7 pound ill never get back

message 962: by Vivien (new)

Vivien People seem to have some pretty strong feelings about this list, but I don't really see the issue. If you don't agree with where a book is located on it, either find a community with more like-minded people, or get off the computer and read a book you like, regardless of where it's placed on this list. I have pretty "Meh" feelings towards all but one of the books in the top ten, and that's okay. I love my books, even if the voting majority of Goodreads.com thinks they belong in the 500+ area.

message 963: by Emma (new)

Emma Ssejjengo How do you tell that a book deserves to be high up on this list? First you have to read so many books to compare it to. That should make books on the worst books ever also worth reading and that is the only reason books like Twilight are important. They make bad books appear good. So guys, do not be bothered by the list. Read anything, there is nothing you lose.

message 964: by Jen (new)

Jen Mad wrote: "are people on crack?? TWILIGHT as the best book. ever. above classics like To Kill a Mockingbird? I'm embarrassed with everyone who voted for that. That book was terribly written. Even my sister, a..."

Ditto this, and the same goes for The Shack, which I saw that someone had suggested. GAG ME.

message 965: by Evelyn (new)

Evelyn why?

message 966: by Escape (new)

Escape People don't read enough. I didn't. Until recently I was stuck to the boob tube. Twilight may not be the best book in the world, but it did start me wanting to reading and for that I have to give it credit. I'm not voting, but it's because I don't believe I've read enough to vote on it. It shouldn't matter what people read as long as they are reading. I feel like I have wasted so much of my life not reading because I wasn't good at it. I have been reading a little over a year now and I am happy and I lost 50 pounds not watching TV.

HEAR! HEAR!

message 968: by [deleted user] (new)

Sure it was a good time-passer, but I'm surprised and annoyed by it...i mean, the top five? plz, it shouldn't even be on the list

I absolutely agree! Harry Potter should be in the place of Twilight! I can't believe they would put it at number 100!

message 971: by Matt (new)

Matt Gibson Marla wrote: "this is the second list--worst books was the first--and i'm done. this is madness. i mean, how many mormons congregated to vote the book of mormon as a top 100 book? really?"

Because we're awesome like that!!

message 972: by Barbara (new)

Barbara Interesting choices, some classics, some modern and ROTFLMAO at the Twilight saga being included here!

Book Worm So are the twilight books there just to make the others look better or what?

message 975: by Logan (last edited Mar 31, 2010 10:20AM) (new)

Logan Wow, Twitlight? Way too many fangirls here know how to vote, it seems.

Oh, look, and Atlas Shrugged, too. If there's an open "best books" poll on the Internet, you know the Objectivists have gotta be there.

Where's the Divine Comedy? It only kick-started the Italian Renaissance, which proceeded to define Western culture as we know it.

Criticism exists in a democracy. Though I wasn't quite aware that an online poll was considered a political atmosphere.

Shellby Twilight is the best book ever? That's laughable.

message 982: by Mikayla (new)

Mikayla Westover Please do not critize the book of mormon it is an amazing book, and it should be #1. Please don't be judgemental either. You can not say that The Book of Mormon does not have a place on this list if you have never read it. Please if you are going to judge this book judge it after you have read it, not before, and not just because it is an LDS book. I really do not get why everyone is so harsh to us. We never talk bad about any other religion, so why do you have to do it to use. I'm sorry about my ranting but it is just really upsetting and hypocritical. Think and research before you judge that is all I am asking.

Thom Dunn Mikayla wrote: "Please do not critize the book of mormon it is an amazing book, and it should be #1. Please don't be judgemental either. You can not say that The Book of Mormon does not have a place on this list..."

Point taken, Mikayla. I'm a Roman Catholic and half in love with all things Mormon.

Logan Mikayla wrote: "Please do not critize the book of mormon it is an amazing book, and it should be #1. Please don't be judgemental either. You can not say that The Book of Mormon does not have a place on this list..."

To say that the Book of Mormon has no place on the list would be a massive error, but I completely disagree with putting it as Number 1 on the list.

To be honest, I'm not sure what I would rate as the best book ever. Plato's Republic would definitely be a candidate, as it was the most influential book on Christianity and Western culture in general besides the Bible itself (which is another possible pick). Paradise Lost is a definite maybe, as is the Divine Comedy, But those are the only books I've ever read in my life that I would consider for "best ever written."

If I were voting in terms of personal preference rather than cultural impact, I'd probably pick The Chronicles of Narnia or The Grapes of Wrath. But I don't like voting on entertainment value because such a thing is an oxymoron, as the existence (and popularity) of Twitlight clearly demonstrates.

message 985: by Gerwin (new)

Gerwin Wallace Jami wrote: "as of this comment, mormons are over-represented by more than three-fold, demographically. either some of the voters here are cheaters (boo!) or mormons are disproportionately the sort of big read..."

I think this list originated in Utah.

Gerwin Wallace Kirsten wrote: "I'm annoyed with Twilight. Extremely

And where is The Shack?"

I also enjoyed THE SHACK. Not as life-changing for me as for perhaps others, but still very insightful and thought-provoking.

message 987: by Daniel (new)

Daniel I think the most interesting bias in the list is the inclusion of plays that were meant to be seen but not read. This makes it almost impossible to vote on these objectively. For example, I would put say Shogun down as a better book than King Lear because it was more enjoyable to read, but put King Lear on a stage with a group of award-winning actors and I think it would be tough to beat in terms of both entertainment and meaningful content.

message 988: by Mandyo (new)

After the Breaking Dawn film comes out, there will be one last flourish, then we will all be ready to move on. Stay strong, eat your vitamins, go toward the light, keep the faith, L, Thom

The Breaking Dawn movie is one I have to see. All the crazy shit that happens in that book--can you imagine seeing it on the big screen, in a theatre full of squeamish young girls and their "I wear Hello Kitty so I'm hip" mothers? It'll be better than Avatar, I swear to God.

message 994: by Gerwin (new)

Gerwin Wallace Ah, a Twilight fan. I knew you were out there somewhere.

message 995: by Helen (new)

C'mon, guys! Let's retain a wee bit of intelligence (and class) here!

Christel Grady It The Book Of Morons, people.

message 997: by Kailen (new)

Kailen The Book of Mormon rocks, ok?

message 998: by Tess (new)

Tess Twilight? It's so poorly written and a complete load of twaddle. This list is a complete joke.

message 999: by Lydia (new)

Lydia I think this list is pretty good... I disagree with a few but that's just my own personal opinion. Other than that I feel pretty good about this list =)

message 1000: by Betty (new)

Betty We are all entitled to our own opinions. I love the Bible and all it stands for. If Mormons want to vote The Book of Mormon as the best book, let them! I'm sure those who have chosen not to follow Jesus would also say that the Bible is not the most popular book sold...but it is.

I would also agree that there are many out there who need to read more and maybe they would change their opinion about what they deem as the BEST book they have ever read. Some are just too funny! And those who take all this so serious need to relax and have a cup of chai!
