Mark And the fact that P.G. Wodehouse doesn't have a single book in the top 100 is pure bull#*@t.

Adam Lauren wrote: "The fact that the Twilight saga is on this list makes me sad for humanity. Or the internet."

yeah twilight is one of those books you give 4 or 3 stars, but you would never have as your fourth favorite book. this list is messed up.

message 553: by Alina21 (new)

Alina21 I kind of think Twilight is annoying too.

Stephanie Twilight was entertaining, but best book of all time? Puh-lease!

The Shack's message was good, but Oprah (as she looked in The Color Purple) as God was disturbing.

message 562: by Kyra (new)

Kyra I have to agree with Jazmine. The Twilight series is amazing. I don't understand how anyone can not like it. I soooo can't wait for New Moon to come out.

Oh my gosh I was thinking the same thing - out of the best books of all time??????

Heidi Marla wrote: "this is the second list--worst books was the first--and i'm done. this is madness. i mean, how many mormons congregated to vote the book of mormon as a top 100 book? really?"

Agreed - I didn't even know there were that many out there.

message 567: by Sarah (new)

Sarah I voted for Jane Eyre, but my favorite books are not on here. I know not many people read Remembrance of Things Past (also known as In Search of Lost Time) by Marcel Proust in its entirety (6 volumes). It's long and is the most difficult book I've ever read, with the exception of James Joyce's the Oddyssey, which I only got through by taking a class on it. But these are the 20th Century's greatest books by the greatest writers. Then there are the 19th century greats such as the Russians, Tolstoy and Dostoevsky and Checkhov. These are books high school kids can and should read. Why are they not here? And don't forget the very accessible Samuel Beckett, who has a play on Broadway (Waiting for Godot). Why are these great classics (and many more) not on this list?

Kevin This list is very subjective, and I truly didn’t expect it to be anything else. It’s more than obvious to me that mainstream fodder has influenced the masses in a big way. Many well-written books have taken a backseat to sophomoric attempts at literature.

I see that Dan Brown has placed in the top 50. The DaVinci Code may have a few good ideas and the story moves along at good pace but the writing is less than refined, and can be irritating. I truly don’t see how this book could rank in the top 500 novels of all time.

I wont even comment on the Twilight and Harry Potter books.

Cory Debjani wrote: "WHAT is the book of the mormons??? And its funny how the bible is written by 'anonynous' :) "

It's a religious text that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints believes to be scripture. You can find it online at http://scriptures.lds.org/

message 573: by Faten (new)

Faten Eassa It is a good idea to refresh goodreads with classics. I'd been happier though if you'd included Swift, Kafka, Joice and Henry James. I was happy to see you include Oscar Wilde as a writer, most poeple think he's just a dramatist. He's also a great poet. It would have been great if you'd have includedالواجهة amongst the classics, goodreads is a global thing, books can be multi culture as long as they bear global matters. Enjoyed voting anyway. Faten

Emily O I'm annoyed with Twilight too. You can like it all you want, but if you think it's "The Best Book Ever" then I just can't respect you. And just for the record, I have read it. I have nothing wrong with people liking it, but it is not in any way the best book ever. The writing alone disqualifies it from being on this list.

I also have a problem with The Book of Mormon and The Bible being here, but I won't get into that argument now. I do find it annoying that people spam lists with those two books. Yes, there are lots of you and you all have the exact same opinions, so you can get your books to the top. Congratulations.
They aren't even very well written!

Well said. "Spamming" lists....I like that. Any day now I expect Twilight to show up on my list of Medieval scholarship.

Thom Dunn Grean Aigs and Spam, of course.

message 582: by Rondra (new)

Rondra Tamplin It's absolutely amazing how obsessed we are as a society to put everything on a "top 100 list.. " etc. Very subjective. A book to one that has depth and meaning can be utter insanity to someone else. Just enjoy people! If you are that obsessed with Twilight being above a great work then make your own list. Happy reading all.

I did not put The Bible on this list but suggest that if you think it not well written you should try the Song of Songs (or Solomon) in the King James edn. Magical poetry !

You said it.

And, as for Twilight being on the list (just being on the list, let alone being number 4 too!!)... I mean, is this for real?

Oh yes, if anyone's ever going to quote the Bible it'd damn well better be from the King James edition - vastly superior to any other versions I've had the misfortune to read/hear.

Well, but if you're going to read books written in the Western tradition, you had best read both Greek mythology and an anthology of Bible stories.....otherwise nothing newer makes much sense.

message 589: by Laura (new)

Laura Op de Beke I'm just looking for Ursula Le Guin here. Shame...

message 590: by The (new)

The Morbid Well, I'm very disappointed to see The Da Vinci Code under the "Worst Books Ever" List. Mr. Brown just exposed the truth so that people could come to their senses, that is, Mr. Brown wanted people to reason with themselves. Therefore, I see nothing to place such a book like the Da Vinci Code in the Worst Books' list. I hope and request the maintainers of this website to cut the book from the Worst Books' list. Thank you. And another thing: I'm very disappointed with The Lost Symbol. Iexpected something more from my most favourite alive.

This is hilarious spoof of a play, usually done by two guys who race through Shakespeare's plays in a crazed montage. Imagine Shakespeare done as a two-hour Monty-Python skit.

message 593: by R.A. (new)

R.A. Brewster Wow, selection was really lacking some titles.

Maybe you have a different translation than I do.
Admittedly, there are some ok sections, but mostly I find it unnecessarily dense and mildly pretentious. Besides, it's so hard to like most of the characters, and they're all so one dimensional....

message 596: by Thom (last edited Oct 22, 2009 05:05AM) (new)

Thom Dunn Well, I held book for a blind employer who proofread a Braille edition. Imagine going through Leviticus with all the gabble involved in proofreading ! I maintain the Book of Joshua is a celebration of genocide but Hey!, don't get me started. I tell my students to read Greek mythology (Edith Hamilton) and a good anthology of Bible STORIES if they want to major in English (More largely, Lit in the Western tradition). That said, Dr. Ruth, no less, maintains that some of the best erotic poetry ever appears in the Song of Solomon; and King James prose/poetry shows up in almost any English-language text thereafter. Same rule applies to Homer, and Shakespeare. It's not about religion for me, not at all, but about literary background.

Pretentious. I'll see you and go all in to raise: What would you call an ill-tempered shepherd god who strikes down a man (Onan) with a thunderbolt because he experienced pre-mature arousal ?
