There is a magical, delicate and inspirational quality to the “quest to understand” experience. I enjoy striving to advance a little bit closer to grasping two phenomena: what is really happening when a human being creates art, and the integral connection between curiosity and the creative impulse. The journey is ongoing, and there is always something new and fascinating to discover about the human imagination.(less)

Even if you are already further down this road, these ideas can help you too. This is an abbreviated discussion; for more detailed observations please visit my blog.

(1) Take one initial action, small or large; meaning, start writing! Starting small makes it easier to build momentum. This may seem obvious, but it is the act of doing that’s important.

(2) Take this first “writing action” regardless of your employment status, living situation, mood and so on. Just get started.

(3) Once started, keep writing. Some good writing habits are: keep a journal about your experiences; set up a creative workspace; set aside a block of time to write daily; study the work of writers (and artists in other fields) who inspire you; think about your life history and your most influential experiences; and connect with other writers.

(4) Share what you’re doing with someone who is trustworthy, supportive and a good listener. She/he will be a cheerleader (aka superfan) as you forge ahead on your journey as a writer.

(5) Stay positive and keep an open mind.

Good luck and enjoy the process!(less)
