سارتر روز ۲۱ ژوئن ۱۹۰۵ به دنیا آمد؛ از پدری که افسر نیروی دریایی بود و مادری که دخترعموی دکتر آلبرت شوایتزر معروف، برندة جایزه صلح نوبل است. پانزده ما سارتر روز ۲۱ ژوئن ۱۹۰۵ به دنیا آمد؛ از پدری که افسر نیروی دریایی بود و مادری که دخترعموی دکتر آلبرت شوایتزر معروف، برندة جایزه صلح نوبل است. پانزده ماهه بود که پدرش مرد. مادر و پدربزرگ اش، او را بزرگ کردند که اولی کاتولیک بارش می‌آورد و دومی سرش را به ریاضیات و ادبیات کلاسیک گرم می‌کرد. در جوانی برای گرفتن مهارت در تدریس فلسفه امتحان داد و رد شد. یک سال گذشت و نتیجة امتحان بعدی در ۱۹۲۹، جایگاه نخست را نصیب او کرد. همین سال است که با سیمون دوبووار آشنا می‌شود؛ دختری که در همان امتحان، نفر دوم شده و فرزند نازک نارنجی یک خانوادة کاتولیک است. سیمون دوبووار، فیلسوف، نویسنده و فمینیست فرانسوی همراه و همدم مادام‌العمر او بود. آشنایی سارتر و دوبووار، در سال ۱۹۲۹ در مدرسهٔ ممتاز اکول نرمال سوپریور صورت گرفت.

بطور کلی دو دوره در زندگی حرفه‌ای سارتر وجود داشت. اولین دورهٔ زندگی حرفه‌ای او دورهٔ پس از نوشتن اثر معروف‌اش، هستی و نیستی، بودو نوشتن رمان تهوع. سارتر به آزادی بنیادی انسان اعتقاد داشت و باور داشت که «انسان محکوم به آزادی است.»
