I haven't felt this passionately about a book in a long time. It's hard to come up with words to explain how much I feel for this book. I found the religious culture in the story absolutely fascinating! I've not read many books with their own religion, especially one so influential over the main character and the way they think. I loved how there was magic and how the magic tied into the religious aspects of the story. Also, I liked that good people weren't always strong and brave and decisive. My brain is fuzzy from being up late to read the story, it was amazing! I was so excited and content reading the story and what the main character, Elisa, was going through. And then BOOM! All of a sudden my heart is heaving great, enormous sobs and my vision is blurring as I'm re-reading the lines, in case I misunderstood, misread, mistook the situation for another. But no, I did not. I tried to read on, stifling my sobs with a tissue pressed against my face, I finished the chapter, but could read no further as my body heaved with silent sobbing. I cried for a good hour and a half!!! Just why? WHY-Y-Y-Y-Y-Y-Y-Y-Y-Y?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! Why, Rae, how could you do this?!?!?!?! My heart aches from the loss, my eyes and face swollen and red. My feels are in absolute chaos!!! I haven't reacted this way since (view spoiler) in Overlander by Suzanne Collins. Gregor the Overlander
(I know I'm late to this series and everything, but that doesn't make the pain any less real and seemingly never ending! And I was spoiled about a certain love interest in the next books by reading a book description for the novellas! I know it's my own fault, should have seen it coming, blah blah blah... BUT!!! the publishers should know better!!! Even if the whole series has been finished for a couple of years!)
Anyway, I really enjoyed the strong sense of culture in this book. It was so richand so real! The characters were amazing, they were good, they were bad, they loved, they betrayed, they were strong, they were weak, they were HUMAN!!! The characters in this book were so real to me. I feel that their personalities were their own, but also shaped by the environment they were surrounded by. I know I already said this, but I absolutely loved the culture and the diversity in this book! It's amazing how colorful and rich the cultures in this book are! I'd try to explain, but I'm exhausted and you really need to read the book to fully understand.
I give this book a 5/5, though I wish I could give it a 10/5!!! I've just completely fallen for this book and the story it tells. Rae, I'm really upset with you (actually furiously sobbing over your reckless decisions), yet greatly admire the choices you made to tell the story you felt best.
I recommend this book to everybody, don't let the religious stuff scare you off, it's a lot different than you're probably thinking. If you don't like this book... are you sure? Maybe you read upside down or backwards or something.
