Newbery Winner. Surprisingly captivating, a survival story based on the true case of an indigenous woman who lived by herself on an island off California in the 17th Century. For a 1960 novel, this is astounding—a story with a capable young woman not defining herself by the men around her. Thoroughly enjoyable.
