I have a feeling Octavia Butler’s vision of a post-apocalyptic America has only become more plausible since she wrote it. What makes her world so realistic feeling is its understanding of the destructive forces already present in society, and the facade of structures such as policing and politics and capitalism that society will cling to past the point when civilization has pretty much crumbled.

There is no holding back on descriptions of violence here, so tread carefully if you’re worried about

This book quickly draws you in. As I read, I had to remind myself that it is a work of fiction, because some aspects of it mirror 2020 reality so closely. The protagonist's commitment to faith is admirable, I am curious to see if she holds on to her faith as the series continues... ...more

The society we know in the US has fallen apart in 2025. the economy has collapsed, Violence on the streets has forced neighborhoods to erect walls for protection, many people are becoming homeless, and climate change makes survival even more of a challenge. Lauren learns what it means to survive inside of her walled neighborhood and outside.
