When I started reading this one I thought I was in for an ordeal. It starts slowly and I struggled somewhat with the Icelandic names, but once the pages started to be numbered in the three digits I found that I was held in thrall by the main character, Bjartur. I honestly detested the man and the ruinous effect his obstinacy had on the lives of the creatures that depended on him. Prior to this, forgetting the purile Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, the only Nordic literature I’d read was also by Nobel laureates (Kristin Lavransdatter and Growth of the Soil). Laxness was therefore up against some stiff competition, particularly as Growth made it into my Hall of Fame. How did he fare? Pretty well actually.

Well it started out well with the mythical language and the atmosphere but it went downhill fast with the unlikeable characters. Took me way too long to read and I had to return the physical book to the library and switch to the ebook to finish it.

This is an impressive novel, winner of a Nobel Prize, said to be a true impression of Iceland. I am very glad to have read it, however it is certainly of the magnitude that is hard to review or describe really. Even though from different countries and different time periods, the story reminded me of Lorna Doone. The life it tells was so rural and rustic. I tried this but couldn't get into it, and then had to return it to the library. This book has been languishing at the top of my to-read list for a while, and I'm letting it go.
