It blows my mind that Nabokov wrote this novel in something like his fourth language. His writing style is so sophisticated. In Lolita, I thought he told the story in a very direct manner and yet the overall feeling of the book seems aimless. Not easy to do.

Discussing this book with my book club was way more enjoyable than actually reading this novel. While I appreciate the literary devices and techniques Nabokov uses, the book was painful to get through. The subject matter was the most obviously difficult obstacle. Reading about a pedophile who's justifying why he's that way, and the relationship he has with a 12 year old is disturbing. Oh, Humbert Humbert you vile villain, you felonious fiend! Dolly was your folly. You are the most miserable of English literature's characters.
What more can one say about Lolita that has not already been said? The story is disturbing but every sentence is a delight. I was almost jumping out of my chair at Nabokov's amazing use of language. I checked Lolita out of the library but I would like my own copy to mark up and learn from. ...more

I read this book a long time ago and think that it would be good to return to it once again. At the time, I appreciated the book and knew that I would have to reread it later. Being so long ago, I feel my impressions are so mixed up with everything else I have ever read about the book and other people's opinions that I need to read it to form my own again.a
