A wonderfully creepy story, with everything a Gothic tale should have: huge old houses, locked cabinets, family secrets, malevolent servants, etc. It's fairly evident from the beginning where the story is going, but the ride is enjoyable nonetheless. The characters were, for the most part, very well drawn. The heroine, Maud, is a bit of a ninny. She's the Gothic equivalent of those silly girls in horror films who hide upstairs when they should obviously be running out of the house, but I suppose

Loses its strength a bit on the length, but the character of Uncle Silas almost makes up for it. He's multidimensional, mysterious and more than once got me to question his nature. Towards the end the plot thickens incredibly fast and you just want to race to the last page, even though it's clear how all's going to be finished. All in all a nice Victorian mystery, especially for the fans of The Woman in White.
