i dont recommend reading this unless you are familiar with the way Gertrude Stein writes. I have read a lot about this woman recently and I find her fascinating! however her writing is difficult to read. I had to put myself into a character and take my time. Not one of my favourites from the 1001 list. Really enjoyed the other Stein book I read but the second story really annoyed me. Not so much the story but the author's reasoning behind a characters personality and habits, generally put down to their race or nationality.

What a collection of uninspiring characters and one brief love story that's drowned in repetitive, depressing descriptions and dialogue. In sum, it's a slog. Don't waste your time.
