An interesting mix of character exploration and Dominican History. What makes our identities and are we prisoners to our history? Also having attended Rutgers it was nice to read a book partially set there.

I really enjoyed this one. The historical information and the setting were great. The characters were really interesting and I'm kind of a sucker for a multi-generational story. Good things first....Ok, it definitely was very different from what I was expecting...and different in a good way. I enjoyed the references to Dominican history (which I didn't know anything about). And my favourite story was probably Yunior's.

Overall I like the book, but I felt it dragged to much for me. I would skip a few pages and he'd still be describing some tree/person/place...which for me I find boring.

But I would recommend to others

I really liked this book because it felt so real. Even though Oscar is a character that is so unlike anyone I know, you can deffinitelly relate to him. It was a great follow-up to In the Time of the Butterflies, because it reinforces the same historical events from the DR history. ...more
