What Members Thought
An interesting mix of character exploration and Dominican History. What makes our identities and are we prisoners to our history? Also having attended Rutgers it was nice to read a book partially set there.
I really enjoyed this one. The historical information and the setting were great. The characters were really interesting and I'm kind of a sucker for a multi-generational story. (view spoiler)and there were definitely spots where I wanted the characters or the story to be fleshed out a little more.

Good things first....Ok, it definitely was very different from what I was expecting...and different in a good way. I enjoyed the references to Dominican history (which I didn't know anything about). And my favourite story was probably Yunior's.
Overall I like the book, but I felt it dragged to much for me. I would skip a few pages and he'd still be describing some tree/person/place...which for me I find boring.

A standout novel purely for it authentic and unique voice alone; but amazing for so many other reasons! You don't need me wax poetic about them - check the reviews here on Goodreads alone. It's been a New York Times Bestseller and a Pulitzer Prize winner to boot. Loved it.

I really liked this book because it felt so real. Even though Oscar is a character that is so unlike anyone I know, you can deffinitelly relate to him. It was a great follow-up to In the Time of the Butterflies, because it reinforces the same historical events from the DR history.
