Wow, I can't believe I let this book linger on my shelf for so long. Far better than I was thinking it was going to be. I haven't devoured a book this quickly in ages. Definitely not uplifting, Cunningham intermingles the stories of three women in different eras as they deal with looming insanity, ennui, and aging with prose that is both florid and simple. I love Michael Cunningham and feel the need to go find every other book he's written.

I'm really glad that I read Mrs. Dalloway alongside The Hours. Nothing...nothing...nothing...can touch Woolf's amazing gift for story telling, but Cunningham's story mirrors it so well that there were times I had to smile while reading. I'm only giving it 3 stars because reading it literally on the heals of Mrs. Dalloway, The Hours was more like a wet noodle than great lit. Perhaps I should have read them in reverse.
