This book is very hard to explain or review. When I am reading Sebald, I find myself occupying a world marked by loss, destruction, and decay. Through his eyes, I can see that we are already living amongst the ruins of our civilization, our prosperity a distant (but vividly realized) memory. The interesting part of this is that reading one of his books is also, at least for me, a supremely enjoyable experience.

You'll note that I put this book on my fiction and non-fiction shelves. The point of view and characters are fiction but there is a dose of non-fiction as well.
This book has a sleepy quality to it. There's no rise and fall, no tension or action to it, which makes it quite unique. It's like sitting by the fire with a fictional W.G.
