Less Than Zero is a reflection on a highly materialistic, wasteful, physically obsessed society that was born in the 1980's, and fathered todays pop culture.
The Story unfolds around the bored, morally corrupt, drug user, Clay, and his depraved entourage. The protagonist, who attends New Hampshire College, spends his summer holiday in his hometown, Los Angeles, which he seems to despise.

With his nervous, report-like, abrupt writing style, Easton Ellis has crafted an empty, vain, and sterile story
