What Members Thought

I am not generally a fan of Stephen King, excepting of course the first four books of the Dark Tower series, but The Shining remains one of the most horrifying books that I have ever read. I try to reread it at least once every few years to experience the sheer claustrophobia of living in a haunted hotel in the Colorado Rockies for a winter with an alcoholic father who slowly goes insane. Kubrick's film version should be required viewing as well.

Though this isn't by any chance the scariest King story I've encountered it has a pressing atmosphere when you're waiting that click when everything explodes in Jack's head. You can just see the little hints spread around until it's sure that the disaster is going to happen. As hard as a subject domestic violence is King makes you turn the page one by one with his superb storytelling and characters.
