I really loved this book.
Each book in this series has been a little better liked by me than the one before. At first I thought this was because I wasn't terribly fond of Roland, and didn't find him to be much of a sympathetic character or one I could identify with, so once the other characters of Susannah, Eddie and Jake (and of course the unforgettable Oy!) became more involved in the plot, it became more interesting to me. I can imagine that this book divides opinion from Tower devotees as it is actually quite a good book but for the most part deviates from the main plot line of Roland’s journey through Midworld towards the tower in favour of back story about Roland’s youth and first love.
This back story offers little or no insight in the character of Roland and I don’t see how any of the events shape the adult Roland. There is also little or no preservative into the overall story of the Tower or events surroundi ...more

Exhausting. Exhilarating. Annoying. Upsetting. This was a big and slow book. But I'm about to the point that I think this series is worth reading. Which is good since with this book out of the way, I'm more than half way done. I think Ka and Katet have a slightly different feel to them than Fate and I suppose Karass. If only this series wasn't such slow reading. Roland's campfire story was certainly better. Even the story of Blaine the Pain was better - just not very enjoyable. But it ended with
