This is the second installment of King’s magnum opus and doesn’t get us any closer to the Tower. That’s’ ok, because what it does do is introduce us to most of the ka-tet. Having read the series before, I loved experiencing these introductions again a way that made them seem fresh. (audio as opposed to novel)

There are so, so many things I love about this series. I love the way King has Roland speak to those he is drawing in his actual voice which seems formal and almost absurd to them. He does so in a way that doesn’t come across as schticky and it certainly could!

I love the way Roland comes to love his ka-tet, almost reluctantly and without a lot of description from King, so when Roland pronounces his love at the end we are not surprised by the feeling, but by the words.

I love, love, love Eddie Dean! Hearing him in Mueller’s voice is very different than the voice of Eddie in my head. I would not have thought it possible to strengthen the depth of feeling for him, but Mueller’s depiction did just that. Eddie is just the right amount of wise-ass over a genuinely sweet and caring guy to ensure you fall for him head over heels every time.

Odetta/Detta – again with the narration! I was never a fan of hers until she becomes Susanah, but Mueller’s MoFos are not to be believed! I can never make that moniker sound even remotely believable in my head but he was able to do so easily and often. I forgot how often our friend Detta uses this term. Probably because I started skipping over it as I read unable to really “get” the sound right.

I cannot express how happy I am that I decided to listen this time around. I had to request these from the library and Wastelands is not here yet. I thought I might cheat and simply read that one, but I think I’ll wait for the audio. The experience is enriched by the vocals and almost seems to be a completely new story. I guess I could view this as a different journey. ;-)

2009-
I read this when it first came out and was not only not impressed, but I was actually completely uninterested. That is a first for me as far as the great Stephen King goes.

I was in the wrong mood/frame of mind to really understand the book, obviously, because this time around I loved it. I read it in a little over a day and did NOT want to put it down.

I can't wait to continue with the series, and am so glad I was gently nudged into trying again. ...more

Like most of King's books, this one was full of graphic detail I could have lived without, but it was also incredibly well characterized, and the plot was engaging, if odd at times. ...more

Such rich detail in character. While many people may find the long exhausting passages on each and every person that passes in these pages to be unnecessary, I, again, finally realize the depth that King is willing to go to create a universe unparalleled to many writers. It lives, they breath... I lap it up !!
