Pretentious and under-whelming. I'm not a horror fan. And I'm not a Stephen King fan, though I read Firestarter long ago. But this series is supposed to be different. Better. Special. Except for the first book which is supposed to kind of suck. And surprise, it does. I prefer my fiction to be straightforward written in a simple style with some sympathetic characters and a noticeable plot. This has no sympathetic characters and barely any plot. I found this edition of The Gunslinger in a Salvation Army thrift store, and, being young and a fan of King's The Eyes of the Dragon, picked it up on a whim. What's 99 cents in the quest for a good read, right? Anyhow, it stands to reason that the first time I read this book I was far too young to appreciate the story. You have to be more than twelve or thirteen to properly experience and assimilate the ideas it presents.
