I liked "The Gunslinger" well enough to read straight through in a couple of days. However, it really seemed too hard to be something, but I couldn't figure out what. I'm sure it's meant to be enigmatic, but a good enigma should never be pointed out. There were several points in the novel where the gunslinger wonders if he's really dead. I, for one, couldn't figure out whether this was a post-apocalyptic novel, a religious allegory, a fantasy quest or what. Why is there a dead kid from New York

Pretentious and under-whelming. I'm not a horror fan. And I'm not a Stephen King fan, though I read Firestarter long ago. But this series is supposed to be different. Better. Special. Except for the first book which is supposed to kind of suck. And surprise, it does. I prefer my fiction to be straightforward written in a simple style with some sympathetic characters and a noticeable plot. This has no sympathetic characters and barely any plot. At least it was short.

I first read this book three years ago in May 2014.
Today i just finished listening to the audiobook version. I wanted to revisit the story with a movie version coming out this summer.
I still don't really know what in the heck this book is about and found it hard to follow and hard to concentrate on. Both while reading it off the page and listening to it, I found my mind wandering away from the story. That said, I do intend to continue the series, I've heard it gets better! ...more

I was finally able to get my hands on the first four books of the series and going on deployment in 2005 had the necessary time to read them. Honestly this book is a little slow to get started, and when I talk about these books with friends and co-workers many of them cite this book as the stumbling block to them reading this series. I was at the advantage though of already having my curiosity piqued from reading the sort of prequel in 'Sisters and Eluria.' Once I got through this one it was all
