A bit dated in language and attitudes, possessed of a few too many convenient coincidences, and stretching credibility more than once (cannibalism so quickly?? surely not!), nevertheless still a classic of the genre and a fun read. I quite enjoyed Lucifer's Hammer though did have a couple of issues.
The plot if fairly simple, a huge meteor strikes the earth ending civilization as we know it. Europe becomes a smoldering creator, Russia and China fire nukes at each other turning themselves into so much irradiated slag, and giant tsunami's reclaim vast swathes of coastal America for the oceans. Survivors then coalesce around a US senators strong hold or side with a religious zealot (cannibalistic mad man) whom of course attac ...more

I was searching for a new book to read on a flight for my honeymoon and came across a list of apocalypse stores and noticed this title. I'd never read anything from Larry Niven or Jerry Pournelle before but I read a few good reviews and decided to dive into it (I'm always a fan of a good end of the world story). Good set up but begins to fail around 400 pages. After the big bang, you're left following the lives of too many characters whom you never really come to care about. Note to future authors, don't name three of your main characters Harry, Harvey and Hardy. It's needlessly confusing.
