[close] In 2014, two experimental viruses—a genetically engineered flu strain designed by Dr. Alexander Kellis, intended to act as a cure for the common cold, and a cancer-killing strain of Marburg, known as "Marburg Amberlee"—escaped the lab and combined to form a single airborne pathogen that swept around the world in a matter of days. It cured cancer. It stopped a thousand cold and flu viruses in their tracks.

It raised the dead.

Millions died in the chaos that followed. The summer of 2014 was dubbed "The Rising," and only the lessons learned from a thousand zombie movies allowed mankind to survive. Shelves: apocalypse

This is a very popular zombie book, one which we chose for a Book Club reading for the Apocalypse Whenever group. Reactions to the book were very mixed — some, like myself, weren't exactly blown away. I did like it — but without much enthusiasm. A friend of mine however, LOVED it, and read it in one day. It took me a bit longer (and I'm a fairly fast reader), I think partly because I wasn't terribly engrossed. Still just as good on the reread for me. Although I have to say that reading a book about a virus nowadays is a little surreal because some of the things in the book hit a bit close to home especially in regards to the political climate.

This one has been on Mount TBR forever, and while I quite enjoyed it, I can't say I'm likely to move on in the series. Never been a big fan of zombies, but while the world is infected, most of the drama isn't too zombie heavy. Georgia, adopted brother Shaun and Buffy are a newsgroup - the new way most honest news is disseminated in this new world and they've gotten the chance of a lifetime....to be the first newsgroup to become attached to a Presidential candidate.

I'm not usually one for zombie books, but Feed sucked me in from the start. Feed is told against a background that feels like now - but with a major twist.

The story behind the zombies was plausible enough that it didn't feel forced or like a stretch. At the same time, despite it being novel with zombies in it, it wasn't a zombie novel, at least not in the same way as World War Z or other recent zombie novels. I really liked it! Dynamic plot with a bit of lame whodunnit. I guess it's probably the most likely outcome. I don't mean lame ending. Things ramp up nicely and become very tense for the denouement. Heavy on the tech but not over my head. Didn't get in the way nor was the story entirely dependent on it. You could move the story 100 years earlier and it still works. Just adjust your expectations: There's an RSS symbol on the cover.

I LOVED this book. I went into it sick of the zombie genre, because it's so overdone right now, but remembering that this came out before all the craze even started. The story takes place 30 or so years after the rising of the dead and follows a team of hard hitting bloggers covering a political campaign. You get detailed info on HOW the zombies happened, something that other authors often leave out, and how the world is coping (or not coping) with the aftermath. So, the writing is pretty painful. Between the 5,000 blood testing scenes, the one-sided obvious villain, and the snarky side-thoughts accompanying almost every line of dialogue, it was hard to make it to the end.

But I'm glad I did. Because *SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT* that chapter when she dies? Totally worth getting to the end for. The final transmission was perfect. Really affected me. *END SPOILER ALERT*

I really wanted to like this book. When I first learned of it, I found the setting and plot summary intriguing. Unfortunately, the grating arrogance of the main characters ruined the book for me. Rather than coming off as anti-establishment, Georgia and company just seem like spoiled brats. It was hard for me to make a connection to these characters and was a disappointing read.
