Finally, after years in the desert, a return to form from Mike Carey My years of avoiding his work, apparently, are at last at an end. Yes, it was extremely Richard Morgan, but no matter, if that's what it takes, a clumsy Richard Morgan knockoff is still miles ahead of his other recent series.

I've read other books recently that deal with handling resource scarcity on Earth by using space travel; the idea being to use other (uninhabited) planets for their natural resources. Infinity Gate is the first that I've seen to turn that concept to alternate Earths. Carey's quippy turns of phrase were frequently laugh-out-loud funny, and I was intrigued by the different Earth evolutions that Carey imagined where different mammalian species evolved as the primary intelligent life. Infinity Gate is a tricky one to review - for the most part I really enjoyed it, and found the world building in particular to be excellent. However, it's hard not to slightly begrudge the first in a series that exists almost purely to put all the pieces on the board in their right positions. The second half of this novel especially really loses pace because of this - and not getting a conclusion of any kind grates slightly. If this series is to be a trilogy, for example, rather than a saga then
