I like zombies. One of my favorites (along with the hordes!) is The Walking Dead. A big reason I love that series is that Kirkland lets us know, right out of the gate, that the story is NOT about the zombies. He never even uses the word. The story is about the survivors and the fact that they are the walking dead. It's a bleak, no win situation. Carey sets up the same situation here.

Shelves: fantasy, science-fiction, horror

I enjoyed this book more than any I read in some time, and I read a lot.

Like many great books The Girl with All The Gift is hard to categorize. Is it fantasy, science fiction, horror? It’s a wonderful gumbo of all of these with a coming of age story thrown in for free.

The characters are fantastic, diverse and with understandable motivations of their own.

I don’t want to go into details about the plot, because the less you know the more I think you’ll enjoy the story.

I picked this book up while visiting the Women and Children First bookstore in Andersonville (Chicago neighborhood) based on their recommendation card and I'm so glad I did! IIRC, this book is for "fans of the zombie apocalypse, Joss Whedon's show Firefly (and movie Serenity), and badass kid heroes" (or something along those lines) and I was not disappointed by that description. I had not heard of this book until browsing their SciFi section but it's apparently already been made into a movie tha ...more
