Again, the concept itself was intriguing...the futuristic/fantasy fairytale retelling with the bonus of a (potentially) redemptive take on an age-old villain. But this reader ultimately found the execution a bit exasperating.

It started out with great promise. Somewhere in Southern France, seemingly far removed from the Eastern Commonwealth and the events of the first book, we're introduced to Scarlet Benoit--a fiery farm girl with a hoodie fetish and a missing granny.

Ehhh... 3.75 stars.

While I am enjoying the series, I felt like Scarlet lacked some of the key energy that Meyer had in Cinder. I never wanted to stop reading Cinder, but I had a harder time reading Scarlet...

Another great retelling by the talented Marissa Meyer this time a retelling of Red Riding Hood. Please note this review may contain spoilers for Cinder so if you haven't read Cinder then don't read this review.

Before finishing Scarlet I was prepared to rate it four stars because it just wasn't as good as Cinder but that was way before Scarlet's POV within the book got good and by the time I had reached the last few chapters within the book I was hooked. Before finishing Scarlet I was prepared to rate it four stars because it just wasn't as good as Cinder but that was way before Scarlet's POV within the book got good and by the time I had reached the last few chapters within the book I was hooked. The need to find out what happened overpowered every other need to do anything else whether it be needing to eat, needing to sleep etc. Reading Scarlet was way more important than those things.

I was quite reluctent to read Scarlet to begin with because I wanted to read more about Cinder, I didn't want to read about some girl trying to find her missing Grandmother. Cinder does crop back into Scarlet however and actually the book is split between Scarlet's and Cinder's POV. I was pleased that Cinder comes back very early into the book other wise it probably would be still sitting in my 'currently reading' shelf. If anyone else feels like this then trust me on this Scarlet's life and situation needs to be introduced before it switches back to Cinder.

Scarlet picks up right from where Cinder finishes which I hadn't expected so fear not people the story carries on and new characters are introduced. We have Thorne who talks to ships and the mysterious Wolf which I can't really say much about other than my theories were in some way confirmed. Then again if I had read The Queen's Army before reading scarlet like I was suppose to I would already know about Wolf and wouldn't need to speculate. There's a lot more danger within Scarlet and it was more fast paced once Scarlet's introduction was out the way. I admit to not really caring about her missing Grandmother but actually felt quite sad when Scarlet did locate her Grandmother. Poor, poor old person.

So overall Scarlet was very good and did actually consume my thoughts with me constantly thinking about what would happen and who Dr Erland was and how he fitted into the story. So for that alone it gets a five star rating from me because Meyer is just too good. I can't wait to read Cress now and find out what happens next. ...more

Marissa Meyer never ceases to amaze. I was stupefied. Really. The way the two characters tie together was beautifully done. I was okay with there being little Cinder-Kai action: they were able to be seen as two characters separate from each other who made decisions independent of what the other was doing (although in Kai's case, not so much). Overall, I liked this book a little less. Which is odd. Not sure if it was the audiobook narrator that turned me off Scarlet's character. I also had a difficult time connecting to Scarlet and Wolf's romance.

But oh, Captain Throne, how I have missed you.
