What Members Thought

Anyone who called this a brilliant debut when it was written by Robert Galbraith was right, anyone who hasn't read this since we learned it was written by J.K. Rowling is crazy. This is an excellent detective novel with characters that leap, off the page. I am sincerely hoping that the unmasking of its author brings the attention the book deserves without dissuading the author from writing more. I need more Cormoran, but even more I need more Robin in my life. I can even forgive Rowling literally

I would give this a 3.5 or so. I enjoyed it for the most part, but I would probably not read the sequels. I didn't like how the ending went, so that soured me on it a bit. I would have preferred the author dropping more clues along the way instead of everything being explained at the end. Too much exposition is never a good thing.

This book had a great beginning. Strike was well created and his temp assistant was very likeable. I had problems when Strike had to interview all the lowlife pals and relations of Lulu. It really dragged then and it was hard to maintain enough interest to finish.
I detested the swearing and despicable roster of characters. What an awful place to be.
The ending was somewhat sudden and surprising, which led to a bit of satisfaction.
Don’t bother reading this one.

3.5 I really liked this book and that's saying something because I don't usually go for mysteries. This made it obvious that JKR is just so talented: her descriptions, metaphors, and word choice. I'm excited to read the next in the series.
