I stand by what I said below about the first book, but now that I have read the whole series I have to say that as a writer, Jim Butcher improves with each subsequent book and as a story, this series is amazing. The TV series may have outstripped the first book, but by book 3, the books win hands down. The long-term story arcs, the rising stakes in each book, and the development of Harry himself are terrific. Plus, while there are arcs that span several books, each book comes t ...more

I watched the series on Netflix and was enjoying it when a friend told me the series was the way to go. Boy was he right, The books blow the series on tv away and I can't put them down. This is a book you really need to read the series in order to keep track.

A dry-humored, witty protagonist and a furiously paced story. Believe me you, there isn't a better combo...

Actually, I would've given this 3 and 1/2 stars were that an option. Some of it was predictable and at least one time something which was left on a desk in an earlier scene appears when he needs it. Overall, I'll read more.

Not bad. I read this because I enjoyed the short-lived tv series and because a friend recommended it. It was nice to see a first-person narrative that did not attempt at doing any omniscience. It certainly was a little more racy/gruesome than I expected, but I based my thoughts on the television series, so that makes sense. I thought the buildup was a little slow at times, but other than that, I liked it.

Fun stuff. I have already requested the second book in the series from the library. I can only hope it gets a teeny bit less hard-boiled--at more than one point in the book I was pretty sure he was going to use the word "dame"--which wouldn't necessarily have been a deal-breaker, but would've definitely broken the suspension of disbelief!
