I complain about everything, and I'm going to keep that streak going with this review.
The romance in this series lackluster. I would say it was best in the first book and peters out towards the last one. Nothing exciting. Nothing swoony or dreamy. There was never any question with this love triangle. Never any doubt how it would go. Still, I wish that it would have made me feel something. The final book is not as rich with events as the second one, but gives a solid conclusion to everything. I love how it ended, giving a decent level of satisfaction.
Finally, more about the magic system and it’s quite interesting. I think I’ve read a couple of books with the same idea of magic to be harmful for the one who uses it. Here there is a nice mix of gems, poisons and madness, definitely makes the story spicy.

I really appreciate the way the series doesn’t shy away from the violence and loss of war. And I really appreciate the way troupes are used and subverted.
