The first book in a dystopian series, Darrow is a "Red," working as a helldiver, mining for resources critical to terraform his home planet (Mars) and others. Darrow is comfortable with his work and love life, married to Eo. Eo wants more for her people, and creates a symbol for her wish. Darrow learns, the hard way, that he is a slave and that Mars has been habitable for generations, committing himself to a new cause. Darrow is a fantastic character and I'm excited to see what happens next.

I made the very unfortunate mistake of reading Red Rising at the same time as Red Queen. They are so similar that there was no question that one was going to win out over the other and for me, that was Red Queen. I’m not saying that Red Rising was bad; I was very enthralled in the whole world of the reds and the golds and the whole war thing but I had to put it down and after finishing Red Queen, I knew I wouldn’t finish Red Rising. I couldn't really empathize with any of the characters and therefore had a hard time really caring about what happened to any of them. The world building was ambitious and the writing was pretty solid but without anyone to root for, I was just reading to finish the book more than caring about what happened in it. ...more
