”Nothing is more painful to the human mind than, after the feelings have been worked up by a quick succession of events, the dead calmness of inaction and certainty which follows and deprives the souls of both hope and fear. ”

‘Oh, I’ll do more than that,’ Mary Shelley said. ‘I’ll create an entire fucking new genre instead.’ SMASH THAT PATRIARCHY.

Loved it! If there had never been a Frankenstein movie and I had no expectations going in, this would have been a terrifying read. I really appreciated the fact that Shelley never mentions the process of reanimating the dead monster - to me, this left much more to the imagination. Reading Frankenstein reminded me of the true essence of horror, the point where despair turns to desperation.
