I loved the Forbidden Hearts trilogy by Alisha Rai so I was so excited to read The Right Swipe. (It’s a spin-off in case you didn’t know!) This definitely leans more towards rom-com and the steam is toned down compared to the previous books of hers I’ve read.⁣

I loved the representation as always and the way that Rai can weave more serious topics, such as CTE, into a lighter story. ⁣

I have mixed feelings leaving this book. I am a fan of Alisha Rai’s previous work and was looking forward to this spinoff. I did enjoy the glimpse of Gabe and crew... though I did not enjoy the romantic relationship in this book. Nor did I particularly like either of the main characters. I found the heroine to be forced and superficial, at times lacking professional maturity to a somewhat embarrassing degree for a “successful business person”. I know that may make me in the minority of her fans, I have mixed feelings leaving this book. I am a fan of Alisha Rai’s previous work and was looking forward to this spinoff. I did enjoy the glimpse of Gabe and crew... though I did not enjoy the romantic relationship in this book. Nor did I particularly like either of the main characters. I found the heroine to be forced and superficial, at times lacking professional maturity to a somewhat embarrassing degree for a “successful business person”. I know that may make me in the minority of her fans, but I was not invested in their relationship or their individual scenes.

What I did like about this book, was that Rai presented to the contemporary romance world a storyline that addresses issues that need a spotlight shone on them.

1. Sexual harassment in the modern work place.
2. Safeguards for athletes health in the short and long term. The book specifically addresses the health risks due to head injuries in football.

As a woman whose background is in management in the financial sector, assumptions of ones role, education, general aptitude, and sexuality were rampant. Having been on the receiving end of unwanted sexual advances, the main characters reaction to her situation was spot on realistic. Another reality that I witnessed in the workplace that I appreciated in this novel, Rai included a male employee as one of the victims coming forth. Well. Done.

In our society there is stigma attached to perceived mental health issues. More so for men, in my opinion. We as a people are to be strong. We put forth our best face that we’ve weathered the storms unscathed. Our mental health is judged differently than our visible physical health. I was appreciative of the manner in which Rai presented the need to have better safeguards in place. This is an issue that has gained more traction in recent years. Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy is discussed very realistically. Well. Done.

So I leave this book appreciating the conversations it may start. For the encouragement it may give someone to speak up and speak out for what is right. For the unique cast of characters it presented. I may not have connected directly with the romantic relationship or the main characters, but I did enjoy other elements of this book.

The right swipe was my first book by this author so I didn't have any expectations going in. I can see why readers would love this book. The secondary characters were fun and It had a plot that a lot of modern daters can probably relate to. I struggled a lot with this one though. My issue sits with Rhiannon who is the creator of one of the largest dating apps. She's cool, she's single, she's self sufficient but I just didn't relate with her. The Right Swipe has a lot going on in one book. Rhi is the successful CEO of a dating app (think Bumble) that she founded. She’s been pursuing the reclusive owner of a more traditional dating site, Matchmaker (think eHarmony/Match) in the interest of purchasing it and expanding her brand.

I'm a big fan of Alisha Rai, her Forbidden Hearts trilogy is one of my favorite series. I really enjoyed that The Right Swipe is set in the same universe and has some characters from those books pop up! This was such a fun read for me, I especially adored that the setting was both LA and Cayucos, CA (one of my favorite areas on the CA coast!)

Rhi was a great heroine, I liked her a lot from Hurts to Love You but this story made me love her. She's such a strong heroine with a "take no shit" attitu ...more

Rhiannon runs into Sampson who has a legitimate reason for his no-show. But Rhiannon’s already been crushed in the past and she’s not about to give second chances. Sampson vows that he’s not the guy she thinks he is if she’ll just give him another chance. Plus she’s been wanting to possibly buy Matchmaker and Sampson’s personal friendship with the founders may give her the in that she needs. Can these two figure out dating in the digital age or is Rhiannon ready to swipe left on the whole thing?

I enjoyed this one overall. Rhiannon is very prickly and it takes her a long long time to drop her defenses and let anyone in. She wears a full suit of armor at all times to protect her heart after being hurt so much in the past. Sampson is patient and continues to prove to her that she can trust him, if she for once will just give him the benefit of the doubt and not assume the worst. I liked watching her tough exterior slowly crack. I do think the romance in this one is a little more of a subplot and the jockeying between the tech companies was a little more the focus. The steamy parts were great but this story is very much Rhiannon’s journey of escaping her past and letting her walls down. Sampson also has his own storyline about concussions and CTE (chronic trauma encephalopathy) resulting in former NFL players who sustained repeated concussions that I thought was really well done. They both have such strong individual arcs with the romance in the background for those who like books where the relationship isn’t the only focus, this may be a great place to start! I loved this one! I flew through it, eagerly devouring Rhi & Samson’s story. While this one gets STEAMY and the chemistry is hot, there’s definitely a lot of focus on the non-romantic plot, including Rhi’s time in the tech world and how her past has shaped her. This is the 3rd tech-related rom-com I’ve read in the past month, but it felt fresh & unique.
