Ever since seeing a production of Les Miserables, Callie has been a huge theater buff. She always wanted to be Cosette, but learned at an early on that she'd never be an actress (she can't carry a tune). In middle school she found the next best thing, stage crew (although my high school friends may disagree that stage crew is the next best thing; they'd probably tell me that it's the BEST thing about any theater production). Callie is especially excited about this year's school production becaus

Callie is a high school student who works in the stage crew for the drama club, and she's scored the job of set design for the most recent production. Before auditions she meets twins brothers Justin and Jesse, and they become good friends. Callie works hard to build a successful set, and learns that Justin is gay, while she develops a crush on Jesse. This book reminds me of my experience in theater in high school, full of work, fun, and definitely drama. The cheerful illustrations are introduce

I really liked this, but it's really more of a 3.75 than I 4. I decided to round up. I am not the biggest graphic novel fan, but Drama is fun, fast, and easy to follow. I thought the relationship drama was extremely appropriate for the middle school audience and characters. As for the reason this book isn't higher than a 3.75 - I was angry about the twist at the end. Raina Telgemeier does get bonus points for totally throwing me off on that one, though! All in all, a fast, fun read.

A really cute and sweet YA graphic novel about middle school stage crew. It brought back a lot of memories for me of my high school drama days and overall the characters were really fun and likable. Raina Telgemeir's art style is a fantastic match for this style of storytelling and makes this book (like her previous work Smile) a natural heir to Amelia Rulez and other fun funny realistic tween/teen GNs. A great read for young teens that I would highly recommend.

Having been a music and theater geek all through middle and high school, I LOVED this graphic novel that centers around a girl and her friends in drama club. This was a quick read, but will resonate with me for a long time. I really enjoyed the twist at the end, too, that finally brought the shy kid out of his shell. This is one to recommend to all of my theater friends.

A really good, breezy read with strong characters and excellent art. Telgemeier's style is very accessible, but there's substance behind it. She introduces LGBTQ issues in a friendly and positive way, so three cheers for that. 3.5 stars.

Drama does a fantastic job of balancing the drama of middle school with the better qualities of extracurricular activities. Raina does an impressive job depicting young teen friendships and romance, and really conveys the feeling of working on a production as a team. Theater geeks of any age will love this book, and its focus on the stage crew rather than the performers deserves a standing ovation.
My thanks to Netgalley for making a preview available.

I'm not normally much of a graphic novel fan, but this one was quite well done and appealed to my inner theatre geek.
