Some interesting ideas, some beautiful language (there is a huge difference between figurative metaphors and nonsensical purple prose, which makes me wonder if some reviewers have never read an actual book before), and a premise that's unwilling to shrink from real pain or to tie it up in a neat bow. I originally read this in 2002 and was blown away by it. I just recently re-read it and it really holds its own despite the enormous hype. It's an eloquent story that details the motions of loss in a profound, sometimes humorous, and human way.
