In Trial Run, we get a quick visit into the world of Namid, one of S Lynn Helton’s recurring characters in the Wild Heritance line of books. This short novella is Namid’s entrance exam for joining the Shadowers (a nefarious (until you know them) guild of thieves). Not the nicest way to make a living, she would agree, but it beats the alternatives available to her.

Exciting read

Having enjoyed Duplicity of Power, I was looking forward to reading Trial Run, the prequel novella, and it didn’t disappoint.

We join a teenage Namid as she looks to complete a trial to officially become a member of the band of thieves, called the Shadowers. Namid accepts a challenge from her nemesis, Aahmes, who comes up with an impossible theft, as well as the challenge of fighting him as part of her weapons-work. A prequel to the author's Wild Heritance series, this novella tells the story of Namid, a sassy teenager who aspires to join a guild of thieves called the Shadowers. Her rival Aahmes challenges her to an impossible theft, which leads to a series of trials for young Namid. The narrative moves quickly, the worldbuilding is handled well, and just enough hints and teases are left to entice readers to continue with the series.
