Let's see if I can sum this up in one sentence: Arthur Dent has a bulldozer arrive in his yard which is part of a move to destroy the earth and---boom!---the planet is destroyed, but somehow he, along with his extraterrestrial friend Ford Prefect, is saved and escapes via hitchhiking on an alien ship, and he learns, while traveling using the Infinite Improbability Drive, the meaning of the universe.
