This was an enjoyable read. It was somewhere between a 3 and 4 for me. How slow the story moved got to me after a while. Also, I liked one character less than the others so whenever it got to her, I couldn't wait to get to the next chapter. Other than that, I enjoyed the magical quality to the writing, the story and majority of the characters. ...more

Different in a good way, with excellent characterization.

A love song to stories and the Thames River, where the humans are secondary. Historic fiction/fantasy that (from what I can tell) takes place in the late 19th century or early 20th.

It begins with stories at an inn along the river, and an incident that ends up becoming one of the inn's customer's favorite stories. Through a combination of the stories and what happens during a year between one winter solstice and another, we get to know the characters around the inn and in the area nearby
