RE-READ! I was overdue to reread this book. The plot is a classic one, and although it has turned up in a million forms (one of the afterwords I read pointed out a long list... including Jane Eyre, Cinderella, Bluebeard, and many many more) I still love Daphne du Maurier's telling, and love how Manderley itself is such a character in this book. Rebecca's greatest strength is its writing style. I'd read it after a long reading slump and had to take several breaks between the pages from sensory overload. The descriptions are beautiful and intense.
You know how in some books, every character comes off as being the same person with the same voice? Maurier's characterization is the exact opposite of that. The characters are distinct, convincing, and elegantly portrayed. They feel real.

One of my favorite things is a truly well written story and I have to say that Rebecca is definitely one of those. This is a story where really not a lot happens but yet everything happens. This story is a mystery, it begins with a young girl who is a companion to an older lady. One day the young girl comes across a wealthy older widow, Maxim de Winter and they seem well suited to each other.
