Rebecca has become the iconic story of drowning in a first wife’s shadow and not being able to measure up to first Mrs. de Winters' beauty or character. To make matters worse she often hears Mrs. Danvers' familiar glint and grimace that the current missus is nothing her first charge. For the waif turned mistress, life has been challenge but if she thought marrying Maxim and moving into Manderley would improve her position, she was hauntingly mistaken.

So very good! Next to my favorite, Watership Down, Rebecca is the best book I’ve read this year! I savored every word and absolutely loved this book.

I get what du Maurier was doing in telling the story through the vivid imagination of the unnamed second Mrs. DeWinter. It's an interesting technique. But that girl is just so blah and naive that it drags the story slowly along.
