What Members Thought

So, if you peruse the other Goodreads reviews, you will find that people either really enjoyed the hell out of this book, or they complained that the last one-fourth or so of the plot got too twisty.
I will say this: the last 1/4 of the book IS very twisty!
But if you're someone who can just accept that upfront and go with it, the ride is very fun. Bonus: the massive amount of twists DOES function to keep you from totally guessing the ending (and all its many unfolding details). As someone who h ...more

I loved this book! It read to me as a classic
Gothic tale, and I was here for it from start to finish. Some other reviews have mentioned it being silly and over the top, and in some instances it is. However, that is one element of Gothic Lit. I haven’t read a gothic novel in years so it was a pleasant surprise to return to a crumbling mansion full of secrets and bloodstains. The main character, Kit McDeere, is a compelling narrator of her own situation as a caregiver previously accused of a mercy killing, and of the tragic events that occurred over fifty years ago in the mansion and seem to not yet be over. The atmosphere is full of danger and tension as the truth slowly emerges in several surprise revelations. Excellent on audio.
