“Never pray to the gods who answer at night…”. What a great line, and what an interesting novel! It was definitely more of a slow-burn than a fast paced page-turner, but I did have a hard time putting it down , and I kept telling myself “just one more chapter…”. True, there were some slow parts, mainly when she’s making her way through France early on and is trying to survive, but I still found it interesting to follow along as she tried to discover the boundaries, and loopholes, of her curse. For all its size, this was a very easy, compelling read. I think Addie could have done more with 300 years of life but, oh, the loneliness!

I was a bit disappointed in the anthropomorphism of the elemental Luc, so the tale became more of a battle for, than a story of, a life. if Addie had done more with her gift she wouldn't have spent so much time ruminating about the darkness of this god.
