A childless couple move to Alaska to homestead in the 1920's. One evening they build a snowman and suddenly, without explanation a young girl appears in the woods. The novel is apparently based on a Russian fairy tale.
The book is fascinating. It is neither fantasy or reality but a blending of both. It is a study of the human heart and the difficulties in letting go of people we love because we love them.... of loving some one the way they want to be loved instead of the way we would like to lov
