What Members Thought
This is an excellent piece of literature chronicling Korean diaspora. Thoroughly enjoyed it and its sweeping story of multiple generations showed how displacement, racism and colonization affect families for decades. Four stars only because the prose itself didn’t change my life.
This is an engrossing multi-generational historical novel about a Korean family in Korea and Japan. The characters are a little simplistic and the relationship that sets the story in motion and resonates throughout strained credulity for me but, at the same time, the author made it work.
The real power of the story for me was the author's depiction and dramatization of Koreans in Japan. It's a situation I knew nothing of and will probably never forget.

This is a long story that covers a fair bit of ground and brings up much to ponder.

June 2019 Book group read. A book about how the Koreans were treated by the Japanese. It was okay but long. Sometimes I felt some things could have been shortened. Pachinko is their version of a pinball/slot machine type of game. You get a sense throughout the book how Koreans were looked down upon. I learnt some things I didn't know about these two cultures. For me though, it was long and there were some parts a little confusing with some of the characters.
