I don’t know why I put this book off for so long! I read this book for a group I am in called book hoarders and the surprise prompt for June. I haven’t read a book that has kept me glued to the pages for so long. This book grabbed my attention from the very start. All the characters were diverse. I felt for all of them. I will say the ending surprised me and at the same time I had a feeling it would end that way.

Overall this book was so delicious; I wanted to keep coming back for more! When I saw most one the positive reviews, I was excited to read a YA book that wasn’t a cliché( more on that). The overall writing of the book was sublime and easy to digest. Our ensemble cast of characters also build to be well liked, and developed into well rounded people (for the most part).

Story

Story

“One of Us is Lying” has a fantastic whodunnit story and some slight twist to keep you enthralled. The pacing of the book is delightful and not too intense to get your adrenaline pumping. However, towards the end I was speeding up the pace to find out what happens specifically to a certain character. This is one YA book I would recommend on writing alone.

Additionally- I did have troubles with not looking at dates of each section, as it’s told from the perspective of “ The Bayview Four”. When you are just wanting to move the story along, those small details can trip you up. Having to go back and re-read different portions as the correct character. However, I believe that is attributed to me and not the style of writing.

Climax

The classic “ locked in a room” troupe is not one I read often, but the “Breakfast Club meets Pretty Little Liars” had me intrigued. I initially had the big AHA moment figured out pretty close to the beginning of the book, as i have read several thriller/mystery novels. When reading mysteries, i aim to try and solve it before our main cast does. Anyways, I was still satisfied with how the moving parts all come into play and not leaving us on a cliff hanger.

Characters

I enjoyed most of the main characters and the journey we are privileged to take with them. You are annoyed at times with others and find yourself rooting for them in another section of their story arc. Some of the ”teenage archetypes” are given a bit of a sprucing, but at times, seem forced. However, I’ll let you decide which one’s I’m referring too.

So, if your looking for a YA novel to read as an adult. I would 1000% encourage you to figure out whose lying. ...more
